Acetyl-L-Carnitine
Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) figures prominently in maintaining youthful levels of cellular energy metabolish and the synthesis and regulation of certain amino acids and proteins. Research has shown that ALC protects nerve cells, regulates cortisol levels and can promote repair of damaged nerve tissue. The University of California has patented the use of the combination of Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Acetyl-L-Carnitine to rejuvenate cells. This was based on a February 2002 U of C Berkeley study Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Acetyl-L-Carnitine, New evidence for rejuvenation potential.
Dosage: 500mg to 2000mg daily.
Precautions: May have a stimulating effect and should not be taken late in the day. Could cause stomach upset or heartburn in some persons. An antacid taken at the same time may prevent this.
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA)
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is an antioxidant and it also potentiates other antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect tissues from the damage caused by aging, pollution and oxidative damage to the brain and circulatory system and other organs. Alpha-lipoic acid taken concomitant with Acetyl-L-Carnitine produced some amazing results in lab rats as detailed in this story of a 2002 U of C Berkeley study Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Acetyl-L-Carnitine, New evidence for rejuvenation potential.
Dosage: 150 mg to 500mg daily.
Precautions: People with diabetes should consult with their health care provider before taking alpha-lipoic acid as it has been associated with hypoglycemia.
Anacervix®
The medication which combines the vasoregulatory action of Vincamine (the alkaloid extract of vinca minor), with the cerebral metabolic activation of Piracetam, so it wakes up your brain and focuses your thinking and concentration!
Anacervix, through the synergistic action of its components is a complete treatment to augment cerebral vasculatory processes, and is used for treatment of progressive and chronic neuronal insufficiencies as well as learning difficulties, or the degeneration of thinking associated with age or intoxication. Anacervix may be used in the treatment of cranial trauma, (accidents to the head), etc.
Dosage: The dosage range for Anacervix ranges from 3 to 6 capsules (1200-2400mg) per day. 9 AM, 1
PM and 5 PM are suggested times to take Anacervix, though the last dose may
be taken later if evening activity is planned.
Precautions: Precautions are indicated in cases of
cerebral hypertension. As with any cerebral activator, it is not recommended
to take the medication in the evening, as it may then cause some problems
falling asleep.
Aniracetam
Aniracetam, like Oxiracetam and Pramiracetam is an analog of Piracetam. Aniracetam is more potent than Piracetam so a smaller dose is required. It has a reputation for increasing intellectual activity, improving immune function, and generating feelings of health and well-being. Effects are usually noticed only after 60 days of use and become more pronounced after 4 months of use.
Dosage:The dosage range of Aniracetam is 750mg-1500mg daily.
Precautions: Possible insomnia if taken too late in the day or
agitation,occasional gastrointestinal upsets, headaches.
Bromocriptine Parlodel®
Has a prolactin inhibiting effect, producing lactation inhibition. Used as a treatment for Parkinsons disease. A powerful but selective dopaminergic agent that can cause growth hormone release in cases of too little growth hormone or normalize growth hormone levels that are too high or too low.
Dosage:The initial dosage is 1/2 to one 2.5mg tablet
daily. The therapeutic dosage is usually around 5 to 7.5 mg and the range is
from 2.5mg up to 15 mg per day.
Precautions: Can cause nausea, can restart menstrual cycle in women past menopause.
Centrophenoxine (Lucidril®, Helfergin®, Cerutil®)
Centrophenoxine is used to increase memory function, and alertness. It has anti-aging properties and can be used to remove brown aging spots (lipofuscin) which develop on the skin. Aging spots can be effectively removed within a year of beginning treatment. Centrophenoxine acts to remove lipofuscin deposits in the brain and heart as well. Centrophenoxine can be taken in combination with Piracetam or Hydergine and reacts synergistically with these medications, that is the effect of taking both or all three in combination is much greater than normal.
Dosage: Normal use is 250mg taken 2-3 times per day. Larger dosages may
be taken as necessary.
Precautions: Centrophenoxine may intensify cases of hyperexitability, agitation etc. and should not be taken by people who are easily excitable. If taken late in the day or evening, insomnia may occur. There is no toxicity at therapeutic dosages. Not to be taken if you are lactating.
Deprenyl (Selegilina) Jumex® Davur®
Known as the "anti-aging aphrodisiac", Deprenyl was originally developed as an advanced treatment for Parkinson's disease, but was found to have profound life-extension effects as well. It has also been successfully used as an anti-depressant, especially effective when combined with phenylalanine.
As a treatment in Alzheimer's disease, Deprenyl studies showed improvement in attention and memory. Deprenyl slows the breakdown of neurotransmitters in the brain and increases the release of dopamine.There has been much research and literature in the past few years about the broad spectrum of aging related symptoms which Deprenyl can treat successfully.
Dosage: For Alzheimer's patients 10 mg per day. For depression 5-10 mg
per day with 500mg of l-phenylalanine. Other uses for life-extension 1-5 mg
per day depending on age.
Precautions: At lower dosages, there seems to be no precaution required. There is
some interaction with MAO inhibitors at extremely high (50-60mg) doses.
Desmopressin(Minirin®)
Desmopressin (Minirin®) is a more potent, synthetic form of Vasopressin which replaced the respective bovine- and porcine-based Lypressin and Pitresin. Desmopressin is similar to a peptide hormone found naturally in the body that is believed to play a part in the formation of memories. It is used to treat to treat specific types of diabetes insipidus, nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting). Desmopressin is also used to enhance short-term memory and enhance memory imprinting.
Dosage: The dosage range for Desmopressin is 1-2 puffs per nostril and should be used only occassionally.
Precautions: Consult you doctor before using this product if you suffer from cardiovascular problems such as hypertension or congestive heart failure or are taking carbamazepine (Tegretol), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), clofibrate (Atromid-S), demeclocycline (Declomycin), epinephrine or lithium. Avoid excessive water intake when using Desmopressin as it can cause water retention and a possible electrolyte imbalance.
DHEA
A naturally occurring hormone whose levels decline with age. DHEA is a significant part of the anti-aging spectrum. Much has been written about it's beneficial effects in strengthening the immune system, as well as for use by diabetic patients to lower insulin requirements. People with Alzheimer's disease have been found to have only about one-half the DHEA levels of normal people of the same age, thus it appears that low levels may contribute to development of Alzheimer's disease. DHEA has also been given as a treatment for obesity.
Dosage: These vary from as little as 25-50mg per day for life-extension to as
much as 1,000-2,000mg per day for diabetes or immune system treatment.
Precautions: While taking DHEA, clinical monitoring of hormone levels in the blood should be done
in order to know when youthful levels of DHEA have been re-established. DHEA use should be accompanied with antioxidants such as vitamin E or alpha lipoic acid.
Diphentoine (Phenytoin, Dilantin) Epanutin®
Originally used in the treatment of epilepsy, Diphentoine has the capacity to
calm violent obsessive or compulsive behavior, depression, etc.
Diphentoine normalizes cell membrane electrical activity, thereby acting to
control various types of seizures. In the same way, by controlling obsessive
thinking it can be used to enhance concentration and learning.
Note : Diphenytoine is especially effective in use with problems involving use of psychedelic drugs. Diphenytoine has a beneficial effect in cutting off negative flashback episodes, and is of use in drug counseling and psychotherapy. Much anecdotal evidence suggests 50-100mg of Diphenytoine will end a psychedelic episode.
Dosage: To aid concentration, 25-50 mg. For obsessive thinking,
compulsive behavior, etc. 50-100 mg. It is best used on a temporary "as needed"
basis, rather than as a permanent treatment.
Precautions: Not to be used by pregnant women, or people with heart or
kidney problems.
DMAE
DMAE(dimethylaminoethanol) is a component of cell membranes and is thought be a precursor of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. DMAE has a similar effect as an amphetamine, though not one in itself. In studies, DMAE has been shown to improve concentration and cognitive function in the elderly and increase alertness. It has also been used in the treatment of Attention deficit disorder(ADD), chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia syndrome, anxiety and tardive dyskinesia.
Dosage:The recommended dosage range for DMAE is 100-500mg per day beginning with a lower dosage and gradually increasing the dosage. According to studies, alterness and mental powers are improved with a dosage of 400mg per day .
Precautions: DMAE supplements should not be used during pregnancy or by persons with manic depression or epilepsy.
Finasteride(Proscar®)
Finasteride prevents the breakdown of testosterone in the body. It is a competitive and specific inhibitor of steroid Type II 5a-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts the androgen testosterone into DHT (5a-dihydrotestosterone ). The breakdown of testosterone produces a variety of substances, one of which can lead to benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Finasteride is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). Finasteride can also be used to reduce hair loss due to male pattern baldness. In general, daily use for three months or more is necessary before results are observed. Continued use is recommended to sustain benefits. Discontinuance of treatment leads to reversal of effect within 1 year.
Dosage:The recommended dosage for Finasteride is 1 mg once a day.
Precautions: Persons with liver disease should not take Proscar®. Women should not handle this medication if pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
GABA
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the product of a biochemical decarboxylation reaction of glutamic acid by the vitamin pyridoxal, as well as by decarboxylase (GAD) and is the most prevalent inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. It helps insure a proper balance between inhibition and excitement. GABA produces a calming effect and can help induce relaxtion, analgesia and sleep. It can also help to decrease body fat levels and increase lean muscle tissue by stimulating the brain to secrete increased amounts of Human Growth Hormone (hGH).
Dosage: 500mg to 2500mg daily.
Galamtamine(Reminyl®)
Reminyl® (galantamine hydrobromide) is a reversible, competitive acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Although the exact mechanism of galantamine's effect is unknown, it is thought to exert its therapeutic effect by enhancing cholinergic function. This is accomplished by increasing the concentration of acetylcholine through reversible inhibition of its hydrolysis by cholinesterase.
In clinical studies the effectiveness of Reminyl® was evaluated using a dual outcome assessment strategy as measured by the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-cog) and the Clinician's Interview Based Impression of Change (CIBIC-plus) and showed a gain of 6-12 units on the ADAS-cog for ambulatory patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease per year while patients receiving a placebo had an average decline of 4.5 units per year.
Dosage:The dosage of Reminyl® (galantamine hydrobromide) shown to be effective in controlled clinical trials is 16-32 mg/day given as twice daily dosing. The recommended starting dose of Reminyl® is 4 mg twice a day (8 mg/day) preferably with morning and evening meals.
Precautions: Reminyl® should not be taken by patients with asthma, severe hepatic or renal impairment or obstructive pulmonary disease. May cause bradycardia. May cause an increase in gastric acid production. Reminyl® has the potential to interfere with the activity of anticholinergic medications.
Glucophage(Dianben®-Metformin®)
Metformin Hydrochloride is an oral antihyperglycemic drug that improves glucose tolerance and is used in the management of non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
Dosage:The dosage range for glucophage is 1000mg to a maximum of 2500mg per day and should be taken with meals.
Precautions: May cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Consult your doctor first if you are currently taking any other diabetes medication. You should not take this if you have any type of kidney or liver disease. Do not use if you drink alcohol. This should not be taken if your are being treated for heart failure with medicines such as Lanoxin®(digoxin) or Lasix®(furosemide). Do not use if you are going to have surgery or an x-ray procedure involving the use of contrast agents (dye injection) or if you have had a heart attack, stroke or have a severe infection.
Huperzine-A (Noitol)
Huperzine is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme that disposes of acetylcholine in the brain and elevates acetylcholine levels. It is an alkaloid found in Huperzia serrata, a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine.
In clinical studies, huperzine showed memory-enhancement in animals and in humans. Users report increased alertness, short- and long-term memory retention, and energy.
Dosage:The recommended dosage for Huperzine-A ranges from 200-400 micrograms.
Precautions: Not recommended for pregnant women or nursing mothers.
Hydergine®
Developed by Dr. Albert Hoffman of Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, Hydergine has been found to have a wide variety of cognitive enhancing properties including increasing the blood flow to the brain, increasing oxygen flow to the brain, acting as a free radical scavenger in the brain. Hydergine reduces symptoms of tiredness, and helps with the intake of new material in learning. Hydergine is known to increase intelligence and recall. Hydergine injectable can be used immediately in cases of stroke. Hydergine is used in Europe for "re-animation," in cases of hypoxia (oxygen starvation to the brain). Tests involving Alzheimer's disease patients found Hydergine helps in slowing or preventing further deterioration.
Dosage: Normal use of Hydergine should involve at least 9mg per day,
taken in two or three divided doses on an empty stomach. Therapeutic use
should be dosage adjusted to achieve results. Hydergine has a bell curve
response, so taking too large an amount is ineffective.
Precautions: In occasional cases of gastric disturbance, nausea, etc., the dosages should be lowered
and/or the Hydergine should be taken with food until tolerance is achieved.
KH3
KH3 is the famous anti-aging drug discovered by Professor Ana Aslan of Romania and has been used in more than 70 countries around the world as an antiaging drug for decades. Every KH3 capsule contains the world famous "youth" drug procaine along with a compound called hematoporphyrin, which enhances the activity of procaine. Many studies have shown that KH3 slows down some aspects of aging, helps people cope with the pressures of life, and makes life seem worthwhile. Precautions:In procaine sensitive patients, the following phenomena could appear: cephalea, shaking, bradycardia or tachycardia, motor or psychic restlessness or allergic reactions.
KH3 should not be administered simultaneously with sulphonamides, eserine or prostigmine.

L-Tryptophan
L-Tryptophan is an amino acid found naturally in the human body. It is an essential amino acid in that the body is not capable of producing it. L-Tryptophan is a precursor for serotonin, and plays an important part in mood-regulation.
L-Tryptophan has been used in the treatment of insomnia, anxiety and depression as well as for appetite supression and other problems.
Dosage:The dosage range for for L-Tryptophan is 500-2000mg per day and should be taken between meals.
Precautions : Do not use in combination with 5-HTP or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, etc.
Loniten®-oral Minoxidil®)
Minoxidil is a powerful anti hypertensive agent that must be administered under close supervision. It is used to treat hypertension and can also be used in the treatment of male pattern baldness.
Minoxidil tablets must usually be administered concomitantly with a diuretic adequate to prevent fluid retention. Concomitant treatment to prevent tachycardia is usually required as Minoxidil increases the heart rate. Because of the potential for serious adverse effects, minoxidil tablets are indicated only in the treatment of hypertension that is symptomatic or associated with target organ damage and is not manageable with maximum therapeutic doses of a diuretic plus two other antihypertensives drugs.
Dosage:The dosage range for for Minoxidil tablets is 5mg to 40mg per day.
Precautions: Do not take Minoxidil if you have: pheochromocytoma, an aortic (heart) aneurysm, or have had a heart attack or stroke. Before taking minoxidil, tell your doctor if you have chest pain (angina) or kidney disease.
Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy. The combination of guanethidine (Ismelin) and minoxidil may cause severely low blood pressure.
Melatonin
A hormone which naturally occurs in the body but declines as we age, it is used as a treatment for jet-lag, insomnia, etc. Melatonin acts to re-set the circadian rhythm or "inner clock" which controls our sleep/wake cycle. This is of great benefit to travellers and other people who get up in the morning, but are not fully awake until later in the day. Using melatonin, the sleep/wake cycle can be adjusted to allow optimum rest at night and optimum function in the daytime. Melatonin seems to have anti-aging effects and has been reported to have anti-cancer effects, probably through strengthening the immune system by re-establishing hormonal levels.
Dosage: 3-9 mg one hour before the time you wish to go to sleep. The sub-lingual type of Melatonin is usually more quick to take effect.
Precautions: Do not use while driving a car.
Memantine(Auxura®-Ebixa®)
Memantine is a specific, noncompetitive NMDA-receptor antagonist which has a novel mechanism of action for the treatment of patients with moderately severe to severe Alzheimer's Disease and vascular dementia. It is the first and only drug approved worldwide for the treatment of the advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease. In clinical tests, Memantine was found to provide rapid and enduring improvement in the cognitive, psychological, social and motor impairments of dementia. These symptomatic improvements lead to an increased quality of life of the patients and reduced home care efforts.

Dosage:The recommended dosage for Memantine is 20mg per day. To lower the risk of side effects the daily dosage should gradually be increased from 5mg to 20mg over four weeks.
Precautions: Memantine use should be carefully monitored by your doctor if you have a history of seizures or have recently had a heart attack, kidney disease or untreated hypertension. Memantine may interact with some other drugs such as Dextromethorphane, Cimetidine, procainamide, hydrochlorothiazide, anticholinergics, anticonvulsives, barbituates or dopaminergic antagonists like L-dopa or bromocriptine. Make sure the doctor knows what else the person with dementia is taking.
Modafinil (Modiodal®)"Provigil"
Modafinil is a eugeroic (good arousal) stimulant that is used in the treatment of narcolepsy. It enhances awareness, alertness and mental clarity without affecting the heart rate or blood pressure. It is unique in its selective stimulation in that doesn't affect normal sleep patterns.
Dosage:The dosage range for Modafinil is 100mg to 200mg a day as required.
Precautions: If you are suffering from a heart condition, it is essential that you consult your doctor. This preparation contains an active ingredient, which could induce a positive result in anti-doping tests for athletes.
Nicergoline(Sermion®)
Nicergoline is an ergoloid mesylate derivative similar to Hydergine®. It has been used in many countries effectively since the 70's for the treatment of cognitive and behavioral disorders caused by vascular insufficiency.
Nicergoline has also been used to treat migraines of vascular origin, macular degeneration and transient ischemia.
Dosage:The dosage range for Nicergoline is 5mg to 30mg daily.
Precautions: Consult with your physician before use if suffering from heart disease, hypertension, bradycardia or you are also taking alpha or beta receptor agonists.
Nicergoline enhances the cardiac depressive effects of propranolol.
Oxiracetam
Oxiracetam was the first analog of Piracetam (Nootropil®). It is more potent than Piracetam and exhibits greater improvement in memory.
Dosage:The usual dosage for Oxiracetam is 800mg twice daily.
Precautions: Possible insomnia if taken too late in the day or agitation,occasional gastrointestinal upsets, headaches.
Phosphatidylserine
Phosphatidylserine is a vital component of neural cell membranes whose levels may decrease after age 50 and can cause a diminishment of mental function and memory. PS has been shown to improve concentration, learning and recall abilities in subjects with cognitive impairments due to Alzheimer's or aging. In healthy, non-active men, PS blunted the cortisol increase that usually accompanies stressful exercise. Elevated cortisol levels promote accumulation of visceral fat, and may interfere with adaptation to athletic training.
Dosage: 100 mg to 800mg daily.
Precautions: Consult you physician before taking Phosphatidylserine if pregnant. May interact negatively with anticoagulants. The only other reported side-effect is occasional, mild nausea.
Piracetam Nootropil®
A nootropic, ( intelligence booster), providing oxygen to and enhancing communication between the left and right brain. Creativity, memory and ease in certain kinds of learning are also increased. The effects of this medication are increased by use in combination with Hydergine and Lucidril (Centrophenoxine). Choline (e.g. lethicin), supplementation is recommended with Piracetam use.
Piracetam is indicated in the prevention and early treatment of Alzheimer's. It is also used for alcoholism, dyslexia, sickle-cell anemia, senile dementia, hypoxia (too little oxygen to the brain), and other conditions of age-associated mental decline. No contraindications or toxicity problems.
Dosage: Between 800 and 4800 mg per day, depending on purpose of
treatment. It is often recommended to begin treatment by taking a large
single dose, i.e. 2400mg-4000mg in order to facilitate patient response.
Precautions: Possible insomnia if taken too late in the day or agitation,
occasional gastrointestinal upsets, headaches.
Pramiracetam
Pramiracetam (Neupramir®) is similar to Piracetam but more potent. Studies have proven it to be effective in improving memory and learning capacity. Clinical effects are usually not seen until 6-8 weeks of treatment.
Dosage: Recommended dosage is 600-mg twice daily.
Precautions: Women should not take this product if they are pregnant or believe they may be, or are breast-feeding. Do not use with alcohol or if you suffer from renal impairment. May cause stomach upset, insomnia or nervousness.
Pregnenolone
Pregnenolone is an endogenous steroid hormone, it is the first sterone derived from cholesterol and is a precursor to estrogen, testosterone, DHEA and progesterone.
Pregnenolone was originally used in the treatment of arthritis but has been shown to be effective in reducing stress levels and inducing relaxation. Animal tests indicate memory enhancing properties.
Dosage:The recommended dosage for Pregnenolone varies between 10-100mg per day. Dosages of up to 200mg per day have used in the treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis and up to 500mg per day for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The subjective effects of supplemental Pregnenolone sometimes take two weeks or more to become noticeable, after this period, most people notice the effects within one hour of ingestion. Pregnenolone should be taken in the morning.
Precautions: Pregnenolone should be avoided by pregnant or lactating women or persons who are at risk for hormonally related cancers.
Propranolol (Inderal)
One of a class of medications called beta blockers it had formerly been very heavily prescribed for high blood pressure. However, by blocking the adrenalin receptor site in the muscle, Propranolol also blocks the so-called "fight-or-flight" response, and can thereby help maintain calmness in tense and nervous social situations. Recommended for performance anxiety situations, stage fright, etc. Use of beta-blockers has been banned in professional snooker tournaments.
Dosage: 10mg-20mg with some food two hours before the time needed.
Frequently a dose as low as 5mg can take the nervous edge away.
Precautions : Propranolol lowers the blood pressure, and therefore should
not be used by people with very low blood pressure.People on any
other medications or with arterial problems, or bronchial problems, asthma,
etc. should check with their physician before usage. Propranolol should be taken
with food to avoid nausea.
Retin-A Retinol Retirides®
This comes as a gel or creme, and is indicated for skin conditions such as Acne vulgaris, etc. It's other use has been as an extremely effective wrinkle remover, because it acts to remove the top layer of skin and allows the regeneration of the layers beneath. Retin-A has recently been granted re-classification in the U.S. by the F.D.A. so it can actually now be called a wrinkle-remover by the manufacturers and not just by the many people who have used it successfully.
Dosage: Apply at bedtime every day or every other day.
Precautions: Discontinue use if irritation, allergy or infection appears. Stay
out of direct sunlight. Keep out of the eyes.
SAMYR®
Developed in the early 1970's, SAMYR® is an enteric-coated, pharmaceutical version of SAMe (S-adenosyl-l-methionine), an energy enhancing, anti-depressant. It appears to enhance the impact of mood boosting neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dompamine by either making the existing receptors more receptive to the neurotransmitters or by controlling the breakdown of the neurotransmitters.
